Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid — a guest room in the restored palace hotel

Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid

Mandarin Oriental · Landmark palace hotel on Plaza de la Lealtad by the Prado, reopened 2021 after a three-year restoration

Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid stands on Plaza de la Lealtad in the city's Golden Triangle of Art, between the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums and the Retiro Park. The palace hotel first opened in 1910, built under King Alfonso XIII with the involvement of César Ritz, and for more than a century it was the address for state visits, weddings and Madrid society.

The hotel closed in 2018 for the most extensive restoration in its history, led by architect Rafael de La-Hoz with interiors by Gilles & Boissier, and reopened in April 2021 as Mandarin Oriental's first hotel in Spain. The work restored the glass dome over the Palm Court, uncovered period details hidden by later alterations, and rebuilt the rooms and suites — 153 in total, including suites overlooking the Prado and the Neptuno fountain.

Dining is centred on Deessa, the restaurant by chef Quique Dacosta, which holds two Michelin stars; the Palm Court serves under the restored glass canopy, El Jardín del Ritz takes meals out into the garden in season, and Pictura is the hotel bar. The hotel also has a spa and wellness area with an indoor pool, and function rooms in the original salons.

As a scouting base it sits in the Jerónimos district, the residential quarter behind the Prado that many relocators shortlist first: Retiro Park for daily life, the museum mile on the doorstep, and Atocha station — for high-speed trains to Barcelona, Valencia and Seville — a short walk away.
