Grand Hôtel Stockholm

Grand Group · Landmark grand hotel on Blasieholmen opposite the Royal Palace, opened in 1874

Grand Hôtel has stood on Södra Blasieholmshamnen since 1874, when the French chef Régis Cadier opened it as Stockholm's answer to the grand hotels of Paris and London. Its pale facade faces the Royal Palace directly across the Strömmen water, with the ferries of Strandvägen and the museums of Djurgården a short walk or boat ride away — as central a base as the capital offers.

The hotel has around 270 rooms and suites in the main house and the newer Bolinder wing. Rooms face either the waterfront and the palace or the quieter streets behind; the signature suites, including the Flag Suite and Princess Lilian Suite, keep the high ceilings, stucco and tall windows of the original 19th-century building, while the spa and fitness centre sit below, built into the rock of Blasieholmen.

Dining centres on the Veranda, whose traditional Swedish smörgåsbord and Christmas julbord are institutions in the city, and the Cadier Bar, named for the founder, which overlooks the water. Chef Mathias Dahlgren has run the hotel's Matbaren bistro and a seasonal restaurant concept here for over a decade, and afternoon tea is served in the Cadier Bar and Veranda through the winter season.

During Nobel Week each December the hotel hosts the Nobel laureates, as it has for generations, and its Winter Garden and Hall of Mirrors host Stockholm's largest balls and banquets. As a scouting base it sits between Östermalm and Gamla Stan, with Norrmalm's offices and shops behind it and Södermalm across the Slussen locks — the districts most new arrivals choose between, all reachable on foot.
