Vila Bled

Brdo Estate · Former summer residence of President Tito on the shore of Lake Bled, now a boutique hotel in a landscaped park

Vila Bled stands in a landscaped park on the western shore of Lake Bled, at Cesta svobode 18 — a quiet stretch of the lakeshore away from the town-centre bustle, with views across the water to Bled Island and the Triglav massif beyond. It is run by the Brdo Estate, the operator of Slovenia's state protocol residences.

The villa is best known as the former summer residence of Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito, who received a procession of state guests here — among them Nikita Khrushchev, King Hussein of Jordan, Indira Gandhi, Gamal Abdel Nasser and Kim Il Sung. The interiors keep the period character: the rooms and suites are furnished in the style of the 1950s.

Today it works as a small boutique hotel, with a restaurant serving the Brdo estate's cuisine, saunas, and a private enclosed beach on the lake, plus rowing boats for guests. In the grounds, the Belvedere pavilion houses a café with one of the classic panoramas of the lake and its island church.

As a scouting base it suits the way many people first test Slovenia: Bled is the country's most international small town, Ljubljana is around 40 minutes away by motorway, and the Julian Alps and Triglav National Park begin at the door. The estate holds the Green Key eco certificate.

Scouting checklist

  • Stay in at least two neighbourhoods.
  • Choose somewhere with a kitchen: it reveals daily costs.
  • Visit a supermarket, a clinic and a school during the stay.
  • Ask the manager where they would and wouldn't rent.

Every listing links to the property's own website. Listings are editorial picks; a Partner tag marks a paid placement, and a Long-stay tag marks places set up for longer stays.
