Grandhotel Praha

TMR Hotels · Art Nouveau grand hotel opened in 1905 below Lomnický štít in Tatranská Lomnica

Grandhotel Praha has been the social heart of Tatranská Lomnica since 1905, when it opened as the grandest address in the High Tatras — an Art Nouveau palace of turrets and gables built for the Budapest and Vienna holiday crowd arriving on the new railway. Renamed for the new Czechoslovak capital in 1919, it has watched the village around it grow from a spa settlement into Slovakia's best-known mountain resort.

The setting does much of the work. The hotel stands in its own parkland at 904 metres, with Lomnický štít — at 2,634 metres the second-highest peak in the Tatras — filling the windows. The cable car that climbs to the summit, via the Skalnaté pleso lake station, starts in the village, and the Tatranská Lomnica ski slopes are a short walk from the door.

Inside, the scale is properly grand-hotel: 123 rooms and suites, two restaurants, a café and five conference rooms, all kept in period style with high ceilings and mountain-facing balconies. A 2017 renovation added the wellness centre, whose outdoor infinity pool steams against the snow in winter — the view in our main photograph, taken at dusk.

As a base for a first scouting trip it is hard to beat: Poprad-Tatry airport is about 20 minutes by road, Starý Smokovec and Štrbské Pleso are an electric-railway ride away, and the whole eastern Tatras — the part of Slovakia most often shortlisted by people planning a mountain move — unfolds from the lobby. We feature it here as an editorial showcase of the region's most storied stay.
