Monasterio, A Belmond Hotel

Belmond · The former San Antonio Abad seminary of 1595, at Plazoleta Nazarenas in the historic centre

Monasterio began as the San Antonio Abad seminary, founded in 1595 above the foundations of the Inca palace of Amaru Q'hata, a short walk from Cusco's Plaza de Armas. Its cloisters, chapel and courtyards — centred on an Andean cedar some 300 years old — are among the finest surviving pieces of colonial Cusco, and the building became a hotel in 1965.

The 117 rooms and suites are arranged around quiet stone courtyards, many of them former monks' cells off the cloister, with hand-carved cedarwood and colonial artworks. Some suites offer added oxygen piped in to soften Cusco's 3,400-metre altitude — a thoughtful touch on a first night in the city.

Breakfast and Andean dishes are served at Oqre, overlooking the main courtyard, while dinner at El Tupay comes with live opera in the old refectory. The gilded chapel, still used for weddings and concerts, holds one of the city's richest collections of Cusco School painting.

For travellers following the classic route, Monasterio is the natural Cusco anchor: the airport is about 20 minutes away, Sacred Valley tours and the trains towards Machu Picchu leave from the city, and Qorikancha, the cathedral and the San Blas artisan quarter are all an easy walk.

Scouting checklist

  • Stay in at least two neighbourhoods.
  • Choose somewhere with a kitchen: it reveals daily costs.
  • Visit a supermarket, a clinic and a school during the stay.
  • Ask the manager where they would and wouldn't rent.

Every listing links to the property's own website. Listings are editorial picks; a Partner tag marks a paid placement, and a Long-stay tag marks places set up for longer stays.
