Base yourself where you might actually live: for Japan that means Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka — and the smaller towns in between. Every stay below was picked by our editors and links to the property's own website. Book two to four weeks if you can: long enough to test commutes, groceries and weekday noise.
Aman Tokyo
Aman Tokyo occupies the top floors of the Otemachi Tower in Tokyo's financial district, moments from the Imperial Palace Gardens and a short walk from Tokyo Station. Opened in 2014 as Aman's first city hotel, it was designed by Kerry Hill Architects with the materials of a traditional Japanese residence — camphor wood, stone and washi paper — arranged around a soaring lobby atrium lit by a vast paper lantern structure.
The hotel has 84 rooms and suites, unusually large for central Tokyo at 71 square metres and above, each with a deep stone furo soaking bath and floor-to-ceiling views over the palace gardens, the Marunouchi skyline and, on clear days, Mount Fuji. Interiors pair ryokan touches — engawa platforms, sliding washi screens and ikebana displays — with contemporary furniture and large day beds set into the window bays.
Dining centres on the 33rd floor: Arva serves Italian cooking built on seasonal produce, Musashi by Aman is an intimate Edomae sushi counter in hinoki cypress, and The Lounge by Aman runs beneath the atrium for afternoon tea and evening drinks. At ground level, The Café by Aman faces the planted Otemachi Forest, and La Pâtisserie by Aman sells French-style pastries and cakes.
The Aman Spa spreads across two floors and is among the largest hotel spas in Tokyo, with eight treatment rooms, Japanese-style bathing, steam rooms, a fitness centre, yoga and Pilates studios and a 30-metre indoor pool looking over the city. As a scouting base it is hard to beat: Otemachi station below the tower connects five subway lines, Tokyo Station's Shinkansen platforms are next door, and Marunouchi, Nihonbashi and Ginza — three of the districts expats most often settle near — are all within walking distance.
