The Merrion Hotel

The Leading Hotels of the World · Five-star hotel created from four restored Georgian townhouses on Upper Merrion Street, opposite Government Buildings

The Merrion was created from four Georgian townhouses on Upper Merrion Street, restored and linked into a single hotel in the heart of Georgian Dublin. It stands opposite Government Buildings and Leinster House, a few minutes' walk from Merrion Square, the National Gallery and the shops of Grafton Street — the government and museum quarter of the capital.

The hotel has 142 bedrooms and suites. Rooms in the main house keep their Georgian proportions — high ceilings, marble bathrooms and views over Merrion Street or the gardens — while the Garden Wing rooms open onto the hotel's landscaped period gardens, an unusual amount of green space for a city-centre hotel. A noted collection of 19th- and 20th-century Irish art hangs throughout the public rooms and corridors.

Dining is led by Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud, Ireland's two-Michelin-starred dining room, which has been part of the hotel since it opened. The Garden Room serves a more relaxed all-day menu overlooking the gardens, the Cellar Bar occupies the townhouses' original wine vaults, and No. 23 is the hotel's small cocktail bar; afternoon tea is served in the Drawing Rooms.

Behind the townhouses sit two gardens, laid out in period style with lawns, sculpture and a terrace — the setting that makes the hotel work as more than a city stopover. There is an 18-metre indoor pool, a spa and a gym in the Garden Wing. As a scouting base it sits in the middle of the Georgian core, with Ballsbridge, Ranelagh and the Grand Canal neighbourhoods — the areas many new arrivals settle in — all within walking distance or a short Luas ride.
