Amanjiwo's domed pavilion and main pool, framed by palms below the Menoreh Hills
Indonesia · Hotels & accommodationStay where you might actually live.61 hand-picked stays — a featured showcase in Borobudur, Central Java, then luxury, mid-range and affordable picks across Indonesia, long-stay options included.

Base yourself where you might actually live: for Indonesia that means Bali (Canggu, Ubud, Sanur), Jakarta, Lombok — and the smaller towns in between. Every stay below was picked by our editors and links to the property's own website. Book two to four weeks if you can: long enough to test commutes, groceries and weekday noise.

Amanjiwo

Aman · Hilltop resort facing Borobudur Temple across the Kedu Plain, ringed by the Menoreh Hills

Amanjiwo sits in a natural amphitheatre on the Kedu Plain in Central Java, facing Borobudur — the ninth-century Buddhist temple — across rice fields, with the Menoreh Hills behind it and the volcanoes Merapi, Merbabu, Sumbing and Sindoro on the horizon. The resort's architecture echoes the temple it faces: concentric circles, tiered stone and locally quarried limestone, centred on a domed main pavilion.

There are 36 suites arranged in two crescents around the main building, each with a private garden terrace and a thatched bale for daytime lounging, and views running either to Borobudur or across the rice terraces; some suites add a private plunge pool. Interiors use teak, coconut wood and terrazzo, with sunken outdoor baths set into the garden walls.

The Restaurant, inside the main pavilion, serves Indonesian and Western dishes at tables that look straight out to Borobudur, while the Pool Club beside the 40-metre main pool handles lighter meals and drinks through the day. A spa, gym and tennis court sit within the grounds, along with a library holding Javanese art and anthropology titles.

As a scouting base it works because the Kedu Plain is real, lived-in Java rather than a resort strip: Borobudur's gates are minutes away, the villages of Candirejo and Krecek are on the doorstep, and Yogyakarta — the city most expats in this region actually settle in — is under an hour's drive, close enough to test its neighbourhoods, schools and supermarkets on day trips.

Scouting checklist

  • Stay in at least two neighbourhoods.
  • Choose somewhere with a kitchen: it reveals daily costs.
  • Visit a supermarket, a clinic and a school during the stay.
  • Ask the manager where they would and wouldn't rent.

Every listing links to the property's own website. Listings are editorial picks; a Partner tag marks a paid placement, and a Long-stay tag marks places set up for longer stays.
