Hotel Bayerischer Hof

Family-run (Innegrit Volkhardt) · Grand hotel on Promenadeplatz in Munich's old town, opened 1841

The Hotel Bayerischer Hof stands on Promenadeplatz in Munich's old town, a few minutes' walk from Marienplatz, the Residenz and the Maximilianstraße shops. Opened in 1841 — its first guest register was kept for King Ludwig I's court — the hotel is still run by the Volkhardt family, now in the fourth generation under Innegrit Volkhardt, and is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.

Behind the classical facade are more than 300 rooms and suites in several design worlds, from Bavarian country-house style to contemporary cosmopolitan interiors, many looking over the Promenadeplatz, the old town rooftops or the hotel's courtyard garden. The Penthouse Garden Suite crowns the building with its own terrace above the city.

Eating and drinking runs through the house: the two-star Atelier restaurant, the Garden restaurant, the Palais Keller in the historic vaults, five bars including the Falk's Bar in the mirrored hall of 1839, and the Cinema Lounge. On the roof, the Blue Spa spreads over three floors with a pool under a sliding glass roof, saunas, treatment rooms and a terrace looking to the Frauenkirche towers.

As a scouting base for Munich it is hard to beat: the Odeonsplatz and Marienplatz stations are minutes away, the districts relocators shortlist first — Lehel, Schwabing, Haidhausen and the Glockenbachviertel — are walkable or one tram ride, and the hotel concierge desk is used to long stays and relocations.

  • Choose somewhere with a kitchen: it reveals daily costs.
  • Visit a supermarket, a clinic and a school during the stay.
  • Ask the manager where they would and wouldn't rent.
