The façade of Le Meurice on the rue de Rivoli in Paris

Le Meurice

Dorchester Collection · Palace hotel on the rue de Rivoli opposite the Tuileries Garden, opened in 1835

Le Meurice stands at 228 rue de Rivoli in the 1st arrondissement, its arcaded façade facing the Tuileries Garden across the street. The Louvre is a five-minute walk along the garden, Place de la Concorde closes the view at the end of the street, and the hotel has traded on this stretch of the rue de Rivoli since 1835, which makes it one of the original Paris palace hotels.

Inside, the public rooms and the accommodation are built on a classical Parisian scale: the hotel's rooms and suites have been newly restored and look towards the Tuileries, the Eiffel Tower and the rooftops of the Right Bank. At the top of the house, the Belle Étoile penthouse suite opens onto a large private terrace, and the Presidential Apartments include one named for Salvador Dalí, one of the hotel's most famous long-term residents.

Dining is centred on Restaurant Le Meurice Alain Ducasse, the hotel's Michelin-starred gastronomic restaurant, and on Restaurant Le Dalí, the more relaxed dining room named after the artist. Bar 228, named for the hotel's street number, is the house cocktail bar, and breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served within the hotel, which keeps the building self-contained for a first research trip.

The spa, La Maison Valmont pour Le Meurice, adds a boutique and treatment rooms to the lower floors. As a scouting base the position is practical as well as grand: the Tuileries and Concorde métro stations put the residential Right Bank districts — the 8th, 9th and 17th arrondissements — within a few stops, while the Left Bank begins just across the Seine at the Pont de la Concorde.

Scouting checklist

  • Stay in at least two neighbourhoods.
  • Choose somewhere with a kitchen: it reveals daily costs.
  • Visit a supermarket, a clinic and a school during the stay.
  • Ask the manager where they would and wouldn't rent.

Every listing links to the property's own website. Listings are editorial picks; a Partner tag marks a paid placement, and a Long-stay tag marks places set up for longer stays.
