Hotel Kämp

Hotel Kämp has faced Esplanadi Park from Pohjoisesplanadi 29 since 1887, when it opened as Finland's first grand hotel — and it still sets the tone for the whole street. Senate Square, the Market Square and the South Harbour ferries are a few minutes' walk away, the design district starts behind the hotel, and the park-facing terrace remains the city's classic people-watching seat.

A top-to-toe renovation completed in 2025 refreshed all 179 rooms and suites behind the landmark facade: high ceilings, marble bathrooms and, in the park-side rooms, tall windows over the Esplanadi. The named suites are destinations in themselves — the Mannerheim Suite honours the marshal who was a Kämp regular, and the Kämp Suite crowns the top floor.

Eating and drinking run on Helsinki institution status: Brasserie Kämp serves French-brasserie cooking from breakfast through late dinner, the Kämp Bar pours under a stained-glass ceiling, and afternoon tea in the brasserie is a standing local ritual. Upstairs, the mirrored Peilisali ballroom — all chandeliers and gilding — hosts the city's weddings and gala dinners, and Kämp Spa adds sauna, treatment rooms and a gym.

As a scouting base it is the obvious Helsinki anchor: the central station is under ten minutes on foot, trams cross the Esplanadi, and the hotel's concierge desk has been arranging everything from archipelago boat trips to Lapland connections for over a century. Use it for a first or last night in the capital, or as the city chapter of a longer Finland research trip.
