Hotel d'Angleterre

Independent grand hotel · White palace facade on Kongens Nytorv, established in 1755 and home to Michelin-starred Marchal

Hotel d'Angleterre stands on Kongens Nytorv, the grand square at the meeting point of the Royal Danish Theatre, the Nyhavn canal and the Strøget shopping street. Established in 1755, it is one of the world's oldest luxury hotels, and its white, flag-topped facade is one of central Copenhagen's defining landmarks.

The hotel has 92 rooms and suites — 37 guestrooms and 55 suites, per its own site — many of them overlooking the square. Interiors run to chandeliers, marble and tall sash windows, and the suites are among the largest in the city, in a building that has hosted monarchs, artists and heads of state for over two and a half centuries.

Dining anchors the ground floor: Restaurant Marchal, which holds a Michelin star, cooks Nordic food with French technique, the Balthazar champagne bar pours from one of Denmark's longest champagne lists, and MAISON d'Angleterre sells the hotel's own pâtisserie from its shop front. The Amazing Space spa adds an indoor pool beneath the building.

As a scouting base it sits at the centre of the map a new arrival needs: the metro below Kongens Nytorv runs to the airport and out to Østerbro, Frederiksberg and Christianshavn, and the neighbourhoods expats most often settle in — Indre By, Østerbro, Vesterbro and the Christianshavn canals — are all an easy walk or a few stops away.

Scouting checklist

  • Stay in at least two neighbourhoods.
  • Choose somewhere with a kitchen: it reveals daily costs.
  • Visit a supermarket, a clinic and a school during the stay.
  • Ask the manager where they would and wouldn't rent.

Every listing links to the property's own website. Listings are editorial picks; a Partner tag marks a paid placement, and a Long-stay tag marks places set up for longer stays.
