Grandhotel Pupp

Grandhotel Pupp · Neo-baroque spa grand hotel on the Teplá river, Karlovy Vary's flagship since 1701

Grandhotel Pupp stands at the upper end of Karlovy Vary's spa valley, where the Teplá river bends past the colonnades and the wooded hills close in. The hotel traces its history to 1701, when Saxon Hall entertainments drew spa guests to this spot; confectioner Johann Georg Pupp and his family bought into the halls over the following decades, and the business that carries his name grew, building by building, into the grand hotel that now anchors the town.

The present neo-baroque palace dates from the turn of the 20th century, when the Pupp family rebuilt the complex to designs associated with the Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer. Inside, the ceremonial heart of the house is the Festive Hall (Slavnostní sál), a stuccoed ballroom and concert hall that remains one of the grandest interiors in Czech hospitality. Rooms and suites run across the main building and the adjoining Quisisana Palace, many looking over the river, the park or the forested slopes above the town.

Eating and drinking follow the classic grand-hotel pattern: the Grandrestaurant Pupp serves Czech and international cooking in a formal dining room, Café Pupp continues the house coffee-house tradition with its own patisserie, and Becher's Bar — named for the Karlovy Vary herbal liqueur Becherovka, first made in the town — pours late into the evening. In summer the terrace and the riverside park take over much of the day.

As a scouting base the hotel sits inside the story Karlovy Vary tells about itself: the hot springs, the Mill and Market Colonnades and the Diana lookout are all an easy walk, and the Slavkov Forest and Ore Mountain foothills start at the edge of town. It is also the long-time host hotel of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, when the Festive Hall and the terraces fill with the festival's screenings and parties.
