The Peninsula Shanghai stands at No. 32 The Bund, on the Huangpu River waterfront in the middle of the Bund's historic concession-era facades. Opened in 2009, it was the first new hotel to be built on the Bund in more than 70 years, and its interiors deliberately recreate the art deco glamour of 1920s Shanghai, the city's most storied decade.

The hotel has 235 rooms and suites, many facing the river and the Lujiazui towers opposite. The Peninsula Suite and the Astor Suite occupy the upper floors, and the hotel also runs a fleet of house cars and its own yacht for river trips, in keeping with the Peninsula group's transport tradition.

Dining centres on Yi Long Court, the hotel's Cantonese restaurant, and Sir Elly's, the rooftop restaurant and terrace on the 13th and 14th floors, which looks straight across the river to Pudong. The Lobby serves the group's signature afternoon tea, and The Compass Bar opens off the ground floor.

There is a Peninsula Spa, an indoor swimming pool and a fitness centre, plus The Peninsula Arcade's boutiques below. As a scouting base it is hard to beat for orientation: the Bund promenade, Yu Garden and the old town are walkable, East Nanjing Road station connects the metro network, and the former French Concession — where many expats settle — is a short ride west.
