Explora Torres del Paine sits on the southern shore of Lake Pehoé, inside Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia. The low, white lodge faces the Paine massif across the turquoise lake, close to the Salto Chico waterfall, in a landscape of granite towers, steppe and lenga forest.

The lodge has 50 rooms and suites in three types: Cordillera Paine rooms and Salto Chico rooms of about 28 square metres, and larger Exploradores suites. Rooms look either to the Macizo del Paine or to the Salto Chico waterfall, and the interiors keep the focus on the view, with jetted bathtubs for warming up after a day on the trails.

Stays are all-inclusive. The kitchen builds its menus around locally sourced Patagonian ingredients and the gaucho tradition of the region, paired with Chilean wines, and every meal and beverage is included in the rate, along with park entrance fees and transfers from Puerto Natales.

Days are organised around more than 40 guided explorations, from treks to the base of the Towers and Grey Glacier to horseback riding with the lodge's own Patagonian horses, kayaking and wildlife watching, with a spa, heated pool, steam sauna and open-air hot tubs back at the lodge. As a base it suits anyone weighing up Patagonia seriously: Puerto Natales, the nearest town, is about 112 kilometres away, so the park itself becomes the neighbourhood you test.
