1898 The Post

Zannier Hotels · Boutique hotel inside Ghent's former central post office on the Graslei, opened in 2017

1898 The Post occupies the upper floors of Ghent's old central post office on the Graslei, the neo-Gothic building raised between 1898 and 1910 for the 1913 World Exhibition to designs by Louis Cloquet. Its clock tower stands in the postcard line-up of the Belfry and St Bavo's Cathedral, and the hotel looks straight across the Leie to the guild houses of the Korenlei — the most photographed corner of the city.

The 38 rooms and suites are named like pieces of mail — Postcard, Envelope, Stamp, Letter — and decorated in the building's own period mood: dark green walls, antique furniture, high ceilings and tall windows over the canal or the Korenmarkt. At the top of the house, suites keep the old sorting-office scale, with freestanding baths and views along the Graslei.

Downstairs, The Cobbler is the hotel's cocktail bar, working through classic drinks in a wood-panelled room that keeps the post office's counters-and-clerks atmosphere, while The Kitchen serves breakfast and afternoon tea. The building's lower floors hold the Post Plaza shops, so the hotel sits inside a working piece of the city rather than behind gates.

As a scouting base it is hard to beat in Ghent: the historic centre is your immediate neighbourhood, the Patershol restaurant quarter is a five-minute walk across the river, and trams from the Korenmarkt reach Sint-Pieters station — and its Brussels and Bruges trains — in about ten minutes.

  • Visit a supermarket, a clinic and a school during the stay.
  • Ask the manager where they would and wouldn't rent.
