Amandari

Aman · Village-style resort of free-standing suites above the Ayung River gorge at Kedewatan, Ubud

Amandari stands on the edge of Kedewatan village, just north of Ubud, framed by jungle and rice terraces above the Ayung River gorge. The resort was designed in the image of a traditional Balinese village: stone gateways, walled garden courtyards and pathways that wind between shrines, so the whole property reads as part of the village rather than apart from it.

There are 30 free-standing suites, each with a private garden courtyard or a swimming pool, plus a three-bedroom villa. Suites are thatched, open-sided in spirit if not in fact, with coconut-wood and teak interiors, outdoor sunken baths and views that run either to the rice terraces or down into the gorge.

The Restaurant looks over the valley and serves Balinese and Indonesian dishes alongside international plates, with produce drawn from the resort's own gardens and nearby farms. A bar sits beside the main pool — a long, curved infinity pool that follows the contour of the hillside above the river — and the spa offers Balinese treatments in pavilions set among the trees, with tennis and a gym on site as well.

As a scouting base it works because Kedewatan is a real, working village minutes from central Ubud: galleries, cafés and the artisan villages of the Ayung valley are on the doorstep, while the resort itself gives a quiet, residential feel for what living on Ubud's northern edge is actually like day to day.

Scouting checklist

  • Stay in at least two neighbourhoods.
  • Choose somewhere with a kitchen: it reveals daily costs.
  • Visit a supermarket, a clinic and a school during the stay.
  • Ask the manager where they would and wouldn't rent.

Every listing links to the property's own website. Listings are editorial picks; a Partner tag marks a paid placement, and a Long-stay tag marks places set up for longer stays.
