Hotel Sacher Wien

Sacher Hotels · Family-run grand hotel opposite the Vienna State Opera, home of the Original Sacher-Torte since 1876

Hotel Sacher Wien stands on Philharmonikerstraße in Vienna's first district, directly opposite the Vienna State Opera and around the corner from the Albertina and Kärntner Straße. Opened in 1876 by Eduard Sacher, son of Franz Sacher — who created the Original Sacher-Torte in 1832 — it remains privately run by the Gürtler and Winkler families and is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.

The rooms and suites pair classical Viennese style — stucco, chandeliers and oil paintings from the hotel's own collection — with contemporary bathrooms and technology. Many look onto the Opera or the Albertina; the signature suites carry the names of operas, and the top-floor suites add terraces over the old town rooftops.

Eating and drinking is the hotel's second act: the Rote Bar and Grüne Bar restaurants, the marble-walled Café Sacher — where the Original Sacher-Torte is served with its apricot jam and unsweetened whipped cream — the Blaue Bar, and in summer the terrace on the Operngasse side. The Sacher Boutique Spa occupies the top floor, with treatment rooms, a sauna and steam bath and a fitness room.

As a scouting base it is hard to beat for a first Vienna stay: the Karlsplatz transport hub is a few minutes' walk, the Ring trams circle the old town from the door, and the districts most relocators shortlist — Innere Stadt, Wieden, Josefstadt and Alsergrund — are all walkable from the lobby.

Scouting checklist

  • Stay in at least two neighbourhoods.
  • Choose somewhere with a kitchen: it reveals daily costs.
  • Visit a supermarket, a clinic and a school during the stay.
  • Ask the manager where they would and wouldn't rent.

Every listing links to the property's own website. Listings are editorial picks; a Partner tag marks a paid placement, and a Long-stay tag marks places set up for longer stays.
