COMO The Treasury

COMO Hotels and Resorts · Luxury hotel inside Perth's restored 19th-century State Buildings, opened 2015

COMO The Treasury occupies the State Buildings at Cathedral Square, the 19th-century Treasury, Post Office and Lands Department buildings on the corner of St Georges Terrace and Cathedral Avenue in the centre of Perth. Restored over several years and reopened in 2015, the interconnected heritage buildings now hold the hotel alongside a row of restaurants, bars and small shops, opposite St George's Cathedral and the Supreme Court Gardens.

The hotel has 48 rooms and suites, and the original fabric shapes them: very high ceilings, tall windows and thick walls, with interiors kept calm and pale — limestone, pale wood and soft grey textiles. Some rooms open onto balconies over the cathedral green, and the largest suites sit in the buildings' original administrative chambers, with separate living rooms and fireplaces.

Eating and drinking is built into the address. Wildflower, on the top floor, builds its menus around the six seasons of the Noongar calendar and Western Australian produce; Post serves Italian food in the Post Office's former franking room; Petition Kitchen and Petition Beer Corner fill the ground floor, and the Treasury Lounge pours the hotel's afternoon tea. COMO Shambhala, the group's wellness arm, runs treatment rooms, a gym and an indoor pool inside the hotel.

As a scouting base for a move to Perth it is hard to beat for orientation: Elizabeth Quay and the Swan River are a short walk downhill, Northbridge's small bars and restaurants start a few streets north, and Perth Station puts Fremantle and the beach suburbs on a direct train line. Kings Park, the city's vast central bushland park, is a bus ride or a steep walk west along St Georges Terrace.
